HABS / HAER Photography:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Having created projects for HABS in the past, full views within the environment is what they prefer. to many detail photographs are generally rejected. elements such as foreshortening, not level, and distortion are also generally rejected.
Things to understand about this level of photography:
As a documentation firm for over 30 years, HABS is the highest level of submission for Our trade. We can only supply the very best photographs to be considered for the archive. The camera involved here is not a $100.00 2oz popper, it is a 20 pound $10000.00 machine with 60 additional pounds of support gear to go with it. Naturally moving this camera around is cumbersome and time consuming. The lenses involved here are extreme, most photographs provided are taken at a 18 mm duplication scale, nothing like the lens on yours so duplication of your provided photographs may not be possible within a given area. Logistical support from you is paramount here for us to create the best photographs. Access to needed work areas, clearing of foliage, and management of traffic flows may be required.
Lighting is key here, only certain times and types of days will yield the best photographs.
Sun transit must also be considered for consistent detail and accurate historical production and representation. Best hours for photography and or vidography are between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. For proper documentation minimal shadows and maximum brightness is required to attain the sharpest and clearest photographs of the subject matter. Also heavy rain or snow days may make photography impossible, one photograph may not look better or worse than the other.
